How to Focus on What You Have Right Now

It's Awful Feeling Stuck

You dream about all the things you could do if you had the money; the time; the people but to become unstuck all you really need to do is to start focusing on the resources that you have right now and forget about lack of money, lack of time, or lack of knowledge or expertise.

When faced with a problem or situation, many people instinctively reach for the solutions that they know - whether those solutions are within their current knowledge or experiences or if they hope to find them. Unfortunately, often these attempts only lead to more confusion and frustration. The solution, it turns out, may be much simpler: start focusing on the resources that you have right now.

If you're stuck in a difficult situation, try to focus on what you can control. Ask yourself: What can I do right now that will help me move forward? What resources am I already working with? Being stuck often stems from thinking about the problem in an abstract way or focusing on what we don't have rather than on what we do have.

So what resources do you have? You may be surprised by what you have available to you, but just by taking a closer look at what you have available you can open up new possibilities for moving forward. Sometimes all it takes is a change in perspective to see things in a new light. When you're willing to explore all of your options, you can come up with creative solutions that can move you forward.

Here are seven tips for using your current situation to your advantage:

1) Consider your strengths. What do you know well and are comfortable with? Focus on using these skills to solve the problem.

2) Look for opportunities. Make a list of all your resources. What could you do with them? Look for ways to use what you have to get what you want.

3) Look for opportunities in your weakness. Consider the things that don't come naturally to you. What might help you get unstuck?

4) Look at the big picture. Take a step back and consider the bigger picture of your situation. This can help you see what is keeping you stuck and what will be required to move forward. If you're struggling, begin with the basics. Commit to something that is simple and enjoyable, rather than something that is difficult and intimidating. If you have a particular skill or set of skills that you want to develop, use it to aid you.

5) Are there any lessons or ideas that you can take from your past mistakes?

6) Take action. When you take action you can review the outcomes, tweak, rewrite and move on. This can give you vital clues to the next step.

7) Try telling yourself a story consistent with a happy ending. Sometimes you need to tell yourself a story in advance.

8) Talk to people you know who are positive and are great at suggesting useful ideas. Often the people who know you best can see how you should use your strengths and weaknesses better.

Finally, the most important point is that you take a step and make progress, just a baby our best lessons are learnt when we make mistakes and when we learn by doing, so don't be afraid to get it wrong as the best lessons are learnt from failure.
